create stronger relationships with their kids with strategies that improve communication and respect.
As parents, we've all been in a situation where it feels like our children just simply don't listen to what we say. Whether is cleaning up their room or taking the dog for a walk, sometimes it can feel like the words of a parent go in one ear and right out the other.
In the Guidance Approach, we like to say that "Children are people too". While it may be difficult for some parents to realise, the apple can fall far from the tree!
Children are independent, what a parent wants isn't always the same as what the child wants. In these situations, recognise that the opposite of "control" isn't "chaos"... its consideration! When your recognise and are considerate of your child's needs and desires, chances are good that they will also be considerate of yours.
When your child says “no” to you, they’re saying “yes” to something inside themselves. Developing a sense of self is important for your kid. You want to raise a confident adult who’s able to advocate for what they need! But without the right guidance, you’ll probably default to trying to control your child’s behavior, which undermines their self-confidence.
Become curious in the moment, find out what your child is saying "yes" to, and help them to meet their needs. They will be much more willing to work to meet your needs if they feel theirs are just as important.
When you feel like you are trying to control your children, try this advice:
Try making requests rather than demands. Requests, such as "Would you be willing to help me?", allows for choice. When a child feels like they are free to choose, and are not being controlled, they are more willing to help.
When making requests, it is not reasonable to assume they will say yes. Allow they to make the choice on their own, and be willing to accept a no. When they do say no, get curious as to what they are saying yes to. This will tell you what their needs are in that moment, and opens the door for collaboration. "I am willing to help you meet that need, but afterwards would you be willing to help me meet mine?".
It can be incredibly frustrating when it feels like you and your child are playing for the opposite team, and can't seem to work together. Luckily, by adapting the way they communicate, parents can start working with their children instead of against them!
This may be the most profound journey you will ever take. Katherine is a brilliant orator, an empath, a motivator, a friend, a mentor and an inspiration.
