create stronger relationships with their kids with strategies that improve communication and respect.
Lack of interest: Children who have no interest in the food being offered may refuse to have supper with the family. Include your child in the planning and preparation of meals to encourage them to join the family at the table. Allow them to assist in the kitchen and solicit their opinions. This might pique their curiosity about the food being provided and lead to less resistance at dinner-time.
Children may also refuse to eat dinner with the family in an effort to garner attention. If they feel neglected or ignored, they may act out to seek the attention they long they crave. Spending meaningful time with your child outside of mealtimes is crucial to addressing this tendency.
Sensory problems: Some kids could experience sensory problems that make some foods unpleasant or even intolerable. If your child has a history of sensory difficulties surrounding food, develop techniques for introducing new meals. If you feel that your child's sensory difficulties are getting in the way of a balanced diet, consider consulting a paediatrician, occupational therapist, or dietician to find a better informed strategy.
Behavioural problems: Children who have underlying behavioural problems may not want to have dinner with the family. Anxiety, ADHD, or oppositional defiance disorder may fall under this category. A mental health expert can offer support if you believe that your child's conduct is caused by an underlying problem.
If your child refuses to eat dinner with the family, or eat what is served, it's crucial to understand the motivation behind this behavior. You can encourage your child to join the family at the dinner table, and encourage healthy eating habits by involving them in meal planning and preparation, spending quality time with them outside of mealtimes, and addressing any sensory or behavioural issues.
This may be the most profound journey you will ever take. Katherine is a brilliant orator, an empath, a motivator, a friend, a mentor and an inspiration.
