A new school year brings more than new teachers, classrooms, and routines. It also brings emotions our kids may not know how to put into words.
As parents, we spend time preparing backpacks, packing lunches, and organizing schedules. While those things matter, our children are preparing in quieter ways.
They may be wondering what their teacher will be like, whether they’ll make new friends, or if they’ll fit in. What our kids need most isn’t for us to have every detail perfectly planned. They need to know they have a safe place to land, no matter what the school day brings.
The beginning of a school year is more than a change in routine. It’s a season of new experiences, relationships, and challenges.
Even children who seem excited may also be carrying worries they don’t know how to express. As parents, we can’t remove every obstacle, but we can remind them they don’t have to face those moments alone.
“The greatest gift we can give our children as a new school year begins isn’t the perfect backpack or the perfect plan. It’s the quiet confidence that comes from knowing they are deeply loved, fully accepted, and always have a place where they belong.”
When children feel emotionally safe at home, they’re more willing to take healthy risks, ask questions, and keep trying when something feels difficult. That sense of security becomes the foundation they carry into every classroom, friendship, and new experience.
Our presence doesn’t remove every obstacle, but it reminds our children they don’t have to face life’s challenges by themselves. Knowing someone believes in them often becomes the courage they need to believe in themselves.
Here are a few ways to help your child feel supported as a new school year begins:

As this new school year begins, our children may not remember every lunch we packed or every reminder we gave. They will remember how they felt as they left home each morning and how they were welcomed back at the end of the day.
When we lead with connection, we give our children something they carry far beyond the classroom. We give them the confidence to embrace new experiences, knowing they are deeply loved, supported, and never alone.
Love and Blessings,
Katherine Sellery
How can I tell if my child is anxious about starting a new school year? Not every child expresses anxiety in the same way. Some become quiet, while others may seem irritable, clingy, or complain of stomachaches or headaches. Rather than assuming they’re simply nervous, stay curious and create opportunities for them to share what they’re feeling.
What if my child doesn’t want to talk about school? That’s okay. Many children need time to decompress before they’re ready to open up. Focus on connection first through a snack, a walk, or simply spending time together, and let conversation happen naturally.
How can I help my child feel more confident as school begins? Confidence grows from feeling supported, not from getting everything right. Encourage your child to try new things, celebrate their effort, and remind them that mistakes are a normal part of learning.
What matters most during the first few weeks of school? The first weeks are about helping your child adjust, not expecting perfection. A calm, connected home where they feel safe, heard, and loved gives them the foundation they need to navigate new routines and challenges with confidence.
